For me, 2009 was about learning to have a sense of humor in the face of life. Although 2009 didn’t yield a job, it proved to be a good year. The time off from work allowed me to cultivate many new and interesting relationships, and delve into a great deal of longed for fashion research, and I hope the near future will incorporate all that I’ve learned and enjoyed recently. I look forward to 2010 being a year filled with laughter; the giddy silliness that reminds us of our child-like hearts holding hands with the world.

It was also a wonderful coincidence that it happened to be Restaurant Week in Las Vegas, which was good news for my budget, as it allowed me to enjoy a great 3 course pre fixe menu ($65) at Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill. The highlight of the meal was the appetizer, a blue corn pancake with barbecued duck and a habanero chile sauce (basically a duck taco wrapped in a blue corn tortilla).

A tree didn’t work logistically, so that was ixnayed, and somehow my plans for making homemade gifts like I usually do didn’t pan out either for some reason. All together, Thanksgiving and Christmas seemed forcibly rushed, and it was more or less like an outer-body holiday experience for me, meaning in layman’s terms that I severely lacked the holiday spirit this year. I can’t complain too much though, as some really awesome meals were consumed during this time. Most memorable was the cheesy shrimp and grits at Brenda’s, which was absolutely to die for and the perfect remedy for a cold, foggy San Francisco day.

With the political strife in Iran, and the death of Michael Jackson, destruction, violence and mortality very much persisted on a psychic level. What I found particularly interesting was that with these two occurrences, I observed how social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have changed the current of news and its existence in real time. Their usual mindless chatter was replaced by real sentiments and ideas, and for a couple weeks, I felt people’s consciousness was united through the collective sharing of information. During this time, I couldn’t help but to feel just a bit uneasy about the world and its future. I suppose one just trudges on, hoping to do your best, be your best individual; with the other option of being swallowed up by the futility of it all, which really is not an option, especially when it comes to shoes.

Socially, the first month of summer began with Christle’s visit from Wisconsin. Was great cause she was my date at Deathguild, now at DNA Lounge, which is a good, practical (has a taco bar), divey venue but just doesn’t have the same grown and sexy appeal as it’s previous location, the Glas Kat. We also saw Peaches at the Regency, a beautiful venue with not so great acoustics, with Dee. Peaches was great, she climbed the balcony of the main ballroom, incorporated some gyration moves, and pseudo-married two gays on stage. However, someone threw a waterbottle onto the stage which had hit her in the head, so she was quite vocal in letting SF know she was not amused.

Joey’s birthday party at Quinn’s Lighthouse was great fun. Who doesn’t love eating peanuts covered in hot sauce and then throwing their shells on the floor?!!! Lindsey’s birthday party at the Tonga Room was fabulous fun as well; sad to think the place will turn into condos if is not considered a historical landmark. Liz and I also stopped at Bootybassment that night, making a pupusa run as well at 3:00am, before returning back to the east bay. The month ended with the Alameda Buddhist Temple’s Summer Bazaar, which was a fun and food filled family event, and where I was a volunteer.

Liz, Amanda, me (in front of her photography) at Space Gallery SF – Bird Flu Show

JULY 2009

Rocket at July’s Oakland Art Mummur

I’m always extremely excited for my birthday month, and this year was no exception. Started the month off going to the Oakland Art Murmur with Liz, Errico, and Rocket. Was a good time, love that the galleries and live music (DJ Brandon Gobi), provide a fun, safe, and artistic setting for those in its city.

Installation by T. Joseph Enos – Artificial Nature – Autobody Fine Art

Also art related, Joey’s installation at Autobody (gallery) in Alameda was phenomenal. Every part, every color, every concept, every nerve of it – was absolutely awe-inspiring to me. He is truly one of the most talented artists I know, which is demonstrated in the quality and depth of his work.

Went to the Renegade Craft Fair at Fort Mason to check out friends, Handmade Whimsy and Nora Aoyagi, and although I didn’t buy anything crafty, it was nice to be out amongst the crafters in the beautiful, balmy SF Marina. Mid-month, took a family trip to Las Vegas, where we stayed at the Wynn, and where I ate an insane amount of really, really good food, including a delicious and very rare 20 oz. ribeye steak from the Steve Wynn Steakhouse.

20 oz. of Pure Love at the SW Steakhouse, Las Vegas

Seriously, I think in terms of my eating habits in Vegas, the saying should go, “What happens (on my plate) in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” And despite the dry heat, which I’m actually getting used to now, I had a really fabulous time, and am ever so grateful for having such an awesome family.

So the big day came, July 23, and it was one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had. The party was at Life/Style at Beauty Bar SF, where friends Tony and Raul DJ and where Liz was guest DJing that night for my party. She decorated with balloons and a Hyphy Birthday banner, and my sister baked homemade red velvet cupcakes. It felt like a really great wedding reception, sans the husband of course, with friends and family, all dancing and mingling, and just having a hell of a good time.

AUGUST 2009

Family, friends, and good food was the prevalent theme for this last month of summer. There was the Surf n’Turf Ladydate at Amedee’s, (potluck style while we watch Top Chef). Her seafood stew was perfect, (the seafood wasn’t overcooked, and it was well seasoned with a bit of a kick), and Jessica’s homemade ice cream and sorbet were absolutely heavenly. August also happened to be the month in which I lost my nettle virginity, as my friend Sophie, The Supertaster, hosted a grilled pizza (my favorite way to eat pizza!) dinner party, which included sautéed nettles as a topping. Her fresh figs stuffed with mascarpone and marcona almonds were incredible as well. More dinners were eaten at Puerto Alegre and the Front Porch in the Mission. The Kwan siblings took a field trip to the Academy of Sciences and of course made stops at Tartine and Mitchell’s Ice Cream too that day. That night, met Liz and Michael at the Silverman Gallery for an art show featuring new SF designers. And later that week, my sister and the Barneys (Liz and Michael) had a garage sale at my aunt’s house, where I had nothing to sell, but kept busy by making conversation and lemonade.

Speaking of Barneys, I went to the Barneys Warehouse Sale and ended up getting my birthday present to myself: a pair of AMAZING Manolos (Cuerta) for a very good price.

I also bought a new pair of glasses for $3 that I'm very excited about!

With an abundance of fruit in the house, I also started experimenting with sorbet recipes based on this one I found from Live2Cook. The first was plum/Chambord. My second was cantaloupe/honey/lavender, and my third was plum/Chmabord/Godiva Liqueur, which appears to be the winner. For my cousin Paula’s birthday it was girls night out at Asia SF and Slide, complete with my first bottle service ever. Went to 111 Minna for Jay Alexander’s birthday party to see Ryan and Dylan dj, no one asked me if I was a tranny that night thank god, cause that’s what some moron did two years ago at the same event! Later that night met up with Natalie and Lindsey at Bar 821 and then had a late night corned beef sandwich with Liz and Josh at Tommy’s Joynt.

“World Walking,” by William Kentridge

Checked out the William Kentridge exhibition at the MOMA, which I liked, was dark and charmingly grotesque. However, the Nick Cave exhibition the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts absolutely blew me away. It was colorful, textural, fun, and really just brilliant.

From Nick Cave's Meet Me at the Center of the Earth Exhibition (Mar 28 -
Sun, Jul 5 2009 YBCA Galleries)

Stacy’s birthday BBQ at the SF Skatepark was a blast, and included burgers, chorizo, and some drunken playground gallivanting. Lee, Dee and I had a dinner and theatre date, went to Cav for dinner, since Zuni was closed for remodeling :(, and then saw Wicked. For the majority of the month, I experienced a horrible intestinal bug, which I believe was healed by the probiotic properties of Dannon Activia yogurt. Hallelujah for that cause it was NOT a cool time!

May always signals the official start of birthday season for me, and the month got off to quite a spectacular start with its first birthday party being Jessica’s. The night included dressy pre-partying at the birthday girl’s house where we sipped on deliciously concocted Manhattans and Aviations. Dessert and champagne were had next at Bix, and drinks in the Russells Room at Bourbon and Branch followed making for an ingenuously fabulous night, and the perfect birthday party.

The following weekend Liz and I saw Hottub at Vessel, and checked out Amanda Lopez’s art show, where The Park put on a pretty impressive performance as well. The next day was Brandan’s birthday brunch at Dolores Park, it was a decadently fun time, this classy braud brought Jello-shots, a Brandan birthday tradition I’ve been doing for a couple years now. But Teddy’s homemade jumbo coconut shrimp were absolutely beautiful, and therefore stole the show; receiving an initial gasp and then clapping as he lifted away the lid of the serving tray. Alex’s homemade salt caramels were absolutely to die for and Dan’s scones, and Dee’s savory bread pudding were certainly hits as well.

Too Much Fun at Dolores Park – Eric spent at least 3 hours being pregnant that day!

At PST at 330 Ritch Liz provided Jesse Boykins III with his stunnas for the show, and I couldn’t stop singing Pantyhose. That Friday was Adrian’s birthday party which started at Badlands, moved to Toad Hall, whose DJ was so on it that night, followed by late night Nizario’s (I actually brought my Escape from NY Pizza into Nizario's cause I like their crust better, but had Nizario’s Castro Special earlier that night for dinner). The following night went to Bootybassment with Jessica, slumbered partied with her, and then had to run through the Bay to Breakers to get Sunday brunch. We had a really nice lady date that afternoon, walking through downtown SF to Hog Island at the Ferry Building, where we had our own beer and oyster festival, since I didn’t make it out to the O’Reilly’s one that day. Sara’s birthday party at Buck Tavern was nice and chill, as was hanging out at the Forbidden Island (Alameda tiki bar) with Christle, Dee and Enrique.

The mixer at Foreign Cinema with the SF Chapter of Ladies Lotto was full of female bonding fun. Was great hanging out with Natalie of Ladies Lotto, Jenny of Acrimony and Terry of Evil Monito. Liz, Gabriella, Christle and I went to Beauty Bar after, and the next night went to Vessel again with the ladies (Liz, Gabriella, Katie, Lin Lin, Sarah) to see Jubilee spin at their happy hour, went to Osha for dinner, Rickshaw to catch her again, and ended the night with Hottub at the Uptown in Oaktown. Was a nice relaxing day catching up with Jesse and Sophie (foodie - writes The Supertaster) at the Ferry Building’s Farmer’s Market, and I’m really excited to try the Rancho Gordo yellow eye beans she gave me. (Reina, Liz, and I had been there a few weeks earlier, was super crazy packed that night, like a hip hop video.) Then Amy’s birthday party at Encore Karaoke was way out of control, so good I can still hear Rick Astley...Never gonna give, never gonna give, give you up...

The Hottub album release party at Loaded at Rickshaw Stop was a really good time, helped the folks get ready, and was designated the official confetti thrower.

Dessert with Amedee, Nate, and Liz at Candybar was delightfully amazing, my faves included: Hennessy mango and sea salt smoothies, the 50/50 soju creamsicle concoction, and the sesame ice cream.

Some of our sweet treats at Candybar: Lemon Tart with Black Sesame Ice Cream, White Sangria, Choc. And despite my tendency to get over stimulated, the floats, firecrackers, kids, and crowds were enjoyed to the fullest.

Spent most of February with a terrible cold, and then cold and all, was off to Vegas with the M.I.S.S. ladies for the trade shows: Project, Pool, Magic, and Guild. Even with the congestion, and the cold medicine brain fog, it was a good trip, and always a blast hanging out with the crew: Liz, Gabriella, Stacy Pants, Amedee, Radio Rose and Skinny Pants. And the parties: Stussy/Camp Lo party, Adidas party at the Peppermill, Fruition/A-Trak party at Planet Hollywood, and the parties that we arrive too late for and missed: Diplo at Ghostbar, another at the Encore.

Me, Gabriella, and Liz at the Project/Adidas Party - Las Vegas February 2009 courtesy of Hypebeast.com

Highlights of the trip included trying on one of Chanel’s most beautiful and most expensive bags thanks to Ruby at Encore's Chanel boutique, (diamond encrusted and white gold black alligator handbag over $260k!) – see the M.I.S.S. post here about it and also Forbes’ article.

One of the world's most expensive handbags: Chanel's "Diamond Forever" tote

Thrifting in Vegas with Liz was so much fun that I missed my flight home, but luckily the airport gods were looking out for me that night, and I was home only 45 minutes, and without any additional fees, after my original flight was scheduled to land. And thanks to Hyphy Wifey, I somehow acquired and for little money: 1 very large chinchilla stole, 5 pairs of shoes – 1 of them being ultra buttery Casadei thigh high boots!, 2 purses, 1 leather jacket, a belt, and a Dior wallet.

March was a blessed month featuring decent health and some pretty fabulous parties. It was a quirky year full of random changes; good, bad, transitional, and not so transitional, propelling me into a state of instant adoption – or just needing to go with the flow.

Met many interesting new people through M.I.S.S. in 2008, and attended New York Fashion Week in September, covering fashion shows and events for the blog, which was an amazing experience in itself. Working in advertising at MNI Time Warner had been going pretty well until they decided to restructure in October, so I was laid off, which turned out to be somewhat a blessing in disguise, since I was already feeling ready for another opportunity. Dating in 2008 was packed with rapturous highs and then some abysmal lows, but I suppose that’s just the delicate nature of romance in today’s modern world. So far, 2009 has been a seemingly odd, but fun year. I keep telling Liz it’s a “year to try new things”. I’m going to stick to that mantra as well, so hopefully the following months will be filled with beautiful and wonderful things and events and states of mind, more perfect and fulfilling than ever assumed, and of course, lots of flowers too.

December 2008/Early January 2009

December had a busy start. Kira and I spent a day at the SFMOMA catching up, where Martin Puryear’s wood sculptures were the happiest I’ve ever seen, and Matthew Barney's wall drawing might have been slightly more exciting if he had incorporated greasy sandwich fingerprints or something into his work atop the walls of the SFMOMA.

Matthew Barney SFMOMA - As you can see, I’m getting better at taking pictures sans a flash. Kira’s bf, Aaron, gave me the wonderful advice to exhale deeply while snapping away.

My favorite of the day though was Katharina Fritsch's sea of black poodles/baby installation, kinda silly, kitsch at its best, with just a dash of insane - which is one of my favorite combos btw (yum, Combos, remember those delicious dog food like junk food crackers/chip things). Okay, so I digress a bit.

Anyhow, my second favorite was Robert Gober’s chest – such a gem, especially considering I’m strangely attracted to amputee looking art…

Liz, Reina, and I checked out the new Joe’s Jeans store opening downtown, and then randomly hung out with the Nike Skateboarding Team brigade (Hunter, Reese, Joey) at the Hotel Monaco, where after the longest night ever, not so great bacon cheeseburgers at 4am never tasted, well…so good. Liz’s and Trent’s karaoke b-day party at DoReMi was super fun. Afterall, can’t go wrong with homemade cupcakes, Lambic floats (Liz’s invention), and boozed up group karaoke. Scott and I saw Milk, which is an exceptional film on many levels – Sean Penn's performance, the story of Harvey Milk and the Castro, and the dire importance for the continuation of the Civil Rights Movement to secure equal rights for gays and lesbians in our terribly homophobic society. Hung out at the Attic after, where the most intimidating, yet freakishly intriguing bartender ignored us, served us, and then ignored us some more.

Julia’s wedding at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay was a pretty spectacular event; fire pits, beautiful views of the ocean, Asian junk food, 90s/00s hip hop wedding jams, Frette bedding, orchid and antique shopping with Dee and Adrian, and killer blueberry French toast brunch at original Johnny’s (their cook randomly belts out opera!) made for a very eventful weekend.

The holidays with the Kwans are always a two-month celebration filled with parties, activities, and insane amounts of good food. My gingerbread house brothel was complete with gimps and slaves thanks to my brother, Jeff, and John. Christmas was spent at four family parties, which consisted of cooking, eating, and then crashing. My homemade Christmas gift for 2008 was home brewed Kombucha tea, something I’ve been doing since the craze started in 90s.

My jarred Kombucha Christmas gifts (left), Kombucha fungus brewing process (right)

Engulfed by a wedding, two births, a death (my grandfather, who had been dealing with cancer for the past few years), and a multitude of holiday parties with friends and family, December was a month pervaded by reflection: mortality, coupling, family values, traditions, and legacy were all topics of relevance tapping around in my head lending to the most conspicuous headache; the kind whose dull omnipresent pain is later regarded with joy and appreciation, having the same likeness that of a love hangover, but respectively erring on the side of a life hangover. My answer: Ibuprofen.

New Year’s Eve was really fantastic this year. To start, Jessica cooked up the most amazing spread for us, which included: Tater tots and caviar (a really superb combination btw), a leek confit tart, stinky cheeses, champagne, and Lambic. Then Liz and I headed off to Sophie’s where Patrick threw the most seriously awesome hyphy hip hop party I’ve been to in months. I had sooooooooo much fun, despite my hair getting soaked with champagne at midnight, though I didn’t get as drenched as hyphy wifey Liz. Thank god she was wearing leathers that night! Lex had hooked it up for us at 1015 to see Diplo. (Thanks Lex!!) Then at 4am, we ended up in Oakland, in front of a house where Hottub and the Official Tourist DJs had been, but it was all dark, and everyone was gone, so at that point we called it a night, both agreeing we had brought in the new year pretty damn right.

January started with Paula’s Poker/Ornament exchange cousin party (Christmas doesn’t end until Chinese New Year in my family). Card games make me really nervous, poker in particularly, so I channeled my inner Jennifer Tilly to help me out, which somehow worked, since I was ahead for half the game, and then won the second place pot of $30. Christle, Dee and Sara and I went to Addis for Ethiopian food, which was a great way to catch up, but not so great was almost getting caught up in the Oakland riots. The Brooklyn Circus Le Cirque event at Yoshi’s SF with Liz and the Hasans was a bizarre, but fun night, and all I have to say is going to Beauty Bar to see Tony DJ with the ladies, (Liz, Jessica, Stacy, Tara, Amedee, and Ritz) should have been called, Thirtysomethings (but not Jessica yet) Gone Wild Night. Highlights included: Jessica and I serenading each other with interpretive dances to Pulp’s “Do you Remember the First Time” and working it out to George Michael’s Freedom. We also stopped off at Amnesia, and then at House of Shields to check out Louder than Bombs’ Morrissey night, where their aggro bartender was unnecessarily rude to me and Ritz. Whatevs.

So this week, thanks to beautiful weather from scary global warming, was able to spend Sunday at the flea market with the fam, and spent yesterday afternoon with Liz eating ceviche at the beach and opening Christmas presents. La dolce vita indeed.

On my mind this week:

1. After months of contemplating a new eyeglass purchase, I finally got the Oliver Peoples Ari frames, and I'm hoping their new presence will further enhance my vision and hence, powers of observation...

2. For someone politically jaded like myself, there was a stir of emotion equivalent to the discovery of a promising new technology; part fascination, part naiveté, and wholly imbued with an infectious joy towards an uncertain, and of course, a much anticipated, brighter future. Like the rest of the world, I am curious to see how the Obama/Biden/Clinton Administration will set out to improve the country’s failing economy, and reestablish effective government leadership.

Speaking of the former, the economy’s downturn also caught up with me in October as I was laid off from Time Inc. Publishing, advertising, marketing and all relevant industries have been hit hard, this article was recently published about layoffs at Time Inc. and Conde Nast. Getting laid off was a surprise, but ended up to be one that wasn’t so devastating. Hell, life takes its twists and turns, so naturally there will be more opportunities in the making. At least now I can have more time to write and plan out my next career move, hang out during the day with my freelancer friends, and run my errands during the week. It’s not so bad. The best part though, is I can stay up late without feeling like Tyler Durden the next day. Hallelujah.

October was also a hectic, but socially abundant month, half of which was spent coming down from the New York Fashion Week trip. Lindsey’s house warming party was a delight, and Anna’s ice skating birthday party was great fun, except this Michelle Kwan did not hit the ice, and instead hit the dancefloor at Bootybassment with Liz and Reina, and then hit up Jeremy’s 50% off sale with Liz and Pauline a few days later. The Ladies Lotto meeting at Ver Unica was fabulous, since the guest speakers were Liz and Gabriella, and the main topic of conversation was their foray into M.I.S.S., and most enjoyable was being able to spend time with some of the other M.I.S.S. ladies, since it’s such a rarity. Oh my god, and the preview of the YSL exhibition at the de Young was incredible. I was extremely excited to do the M.I.S.S. write up for it, since Yves Saint Laurent has always been my favorite designer, and I was able to see his partner, Pierre Berge (who was wearing an Obama pin) speak, which was superbly impressive as well.

November was interesting and quite social as well. Started with PST’s election celebration party at 330 Ritch with Reina, which was way totally off the hook. Saw the Official Tourist DJs at Pink with Liz, and was absolutely shocked but of course happy to run into Joe and Jason at the LW, since I hadn’t seen either of them for like two years. Hanging out with Theresa was also great fun, since her visits from Hawaii are so few and far between. Computer Rock at Laszlo’s to see Liz (who rocked the freestyle jams that night), Ryan, and Dylan DJ was a blast, especially since I got to see my homies, Errico and Pauline too. Hung out with Scott at Zeitgeist and then we saw Emo Philips at the Punchline. Sheng Wang opened for him, and it was a bit uncanny, since he totally reminds me of Errico, but in Asian form.

The Hamsters
Thanksgiving included the perfect spead of Thanksgiving-ish treats Kwan style (turkeys, sides, ham, prime rib, taro shrimp - we call them “Hamsters” cause that’s what they kinda look like, chili, lamb stew, lumpias, spaghettti/meatballs, tamales, fresh crab salad, coffee cruch cake, flan etc.) My contribution this year was a sweet potato pie – completely from scratch, and super loaded deviled eggs (topped with bacon, scallions, and dill).

I’ve also been able to catch up on my list of TO SEE movies, and have gotten some reading done as well (and no, I am not a part of the Twilight cult like some others I know). I haven’t felt this wonderfully relaxed in a very long time. It’s a pretty awesome karmic package that I am so thankful for, and I’m really looking forward to more holiday visitors, including: Kira, Christle, Christine and Sergio, and their newborn, Isabella, and to the rest of the holiday season. Cheers to good food, friends, and family. There ain’t nothing better than that…well, a little YSL Y-mail clutch under the tree would be nice too! ;)

On my mind this week:

1. I found my favorite hot sauce of all time, and let me tell you, it’s been like the quest for the mf-ing holy grail. It all started back in 2003 when I discovered it in the lunchroom fridge while I was working at Enterprise Corporate. Then a few weeks ago, I was in Smart and Final, and lo and behold, there it was, and only a dollar! Florescent green and hot as hell. It’s sooooo good. I’ve been putting it on everything!!

2. The Tuesday PST (Pacific Standard Time) party at 330 Ritch is so much fun! For anybody who loves to dance to good hip hop music spun by great longtime Bay Area DJs like Sake1, (not obnoxious DJs spinning bad medleys flocked by suburbanite chicks wearing barely any clothes and too much makeup), and sans the meat market and hipsters, this is the place.

3. So before I was told by the specialists that my right breast is filled with fibro-cystic tissue and not cancer, I’m lying down on the examination table in my hospital gown, when the doctor says, “nice boots”, while she is examining my boobs (these Kitson Ugg boots embroidered with “LA” really big on them and studded with Swarovski crystals - the ones Hyphy Wifey Liz hates). The Freudian slip happened only in my head thank god, causing my jaw to drop for just a millisecond.

4.

This was so rad. At the last Computer Rock at Laszlo’s, Dylan hooked up a Nintendo to the projector, so Super Mario Brothers 1 was like super ginormous Mario brothers. And oh my god, I can’t believe how great Liz’s memory is, can you say Warp Zone!!! Crazy…

5. However, it wasn’t quite like the way I had envisioned. I thought I would have all this time to clean, sort, and organize, maybe write a novel, grow vegetables, and at least get all my dry cleaning done. Instead, the opportunity to go to New York for Spring 09 Fashion Week presented itself, so of course I had to go. Although before I left, I did manage to organize my three closets, shifting shoes piled in the kitchen to photographed marked boxes, and to these great ones Ikea has right now for $10 for a pack of 4.

Also prior to leaving, I hung out with Jesse at the SOMA Magazine’s G Star Store party for the launch of Men’s Underwear line, where I had been expecting models to be modeling underwear, but only were presented with fully clothed ones…Cash Gift’s birthday bash was great fun too, and those El Presidentes…well that was quite a night…Lee, Dee, and I had a Zuni Café date, which was a very fine time of catching up over their delicious One Hour Chicken, and Sophie’s birthday dinner at The Front Porch was so much fun (after getting the plans confused, I showed up two weeks early), but when I made it on the right night, I discovered the place is crazy cozy, like if Beauty Bar was a restaurant/Cuban social club - and their Spicy Crab Grits and Fried Chicken are culinary feats of rustic perfection. We went to the Attic after, and their blonde DJ that night played such a good set of the saddest New Wave songs ever, that I was transported right back to my teens...Then I had gone to Vegas where I took bubble baths, drank poolside at the Wynn, went to bed early, watched cable TV, gambled a bit, and went snackless; eating 3 excessively large meals a day.

A week later, I was in New York for Fashion Week with Liz and Gabriella. Liz and I took the red eye out of Oakland to JFK, and once our feet hit the ground, the madness started, lasting 11 days.

It was an insanely busy trip, but also a fabulously fun trip, with a large portion of it documented on the misscrew blog, (see the the LINKS below).

Highlights of the trip included: The New York Fashion Week opening party at Saks, chronicled on misscrew.com, where 19 designers made 19 pairs of their interpretations of Dorothy’s ruby slippers using Swarovski crystals. I saw Betsey Johnson there, and leggy Lizzy was our paparazzi photographer, since Gabriella and I are such shortaaays. Gap/Colette pop up store opening was intense. Gabriella is so hardcore, 2 ½ hours she waited, I came around hour 2, and left with the most impressive Gap items I’ve ever purchased. We have her to thank too, as she scored Liz and I the coveted secret fashion week YSL totes.

The Oak Bond Age Party at the Eagle was a surprise, funny cause had I realized it really was a bondage party, my outfit might have been a little different.

The NYEuro techno rave at the WAD Magazine Party at Hiro was so much fun...and with Gabriella dancing in heels too! I can still hear Salt n’ Pepa…

Saw Uffie at the MISSHAPES/MISSBEHAVE Magazine party, where Radio Rose spun a pretty amazing set, and since Dov gave the Heartschallenger Truck a jump, we all got free candy! Checking out the MOMA’s Dali exhibit, the gothic exhibit at FIT, and Koons’ latest installation at the Met was totally amazing and inspiring, but eating hot dogs and shootin the shit in Central Park with my homegirl Kira, eating 2am tapas at Carrera and with Liz and Lex, eating street cart falafels at four in the morning with Gabriella and Dov, and eating a steak at the Algonquin after getting lost, these were the best!

Coming back to California was much anticipated, for as wonderful as New York is in terms of shopping and its social aspect, I'm not quite the type who does well living out of a suitcase, or with humidity. When East Bay life resumed, celebrated with a Juanita’s homie jam session with Liz, Danny, and Errico, which was just like old times, full of giggles, cackles, and cracks. Had sushi with Cash Gift and then went to Kitty’s for Dee’s b-day with Trang, Julia, and Edwin, which involved shots on a Monday night and some extra hyphyness...It’s so nice to be home, back to tepid Bay Area weather, real Mexican food, and my own bed, and of course, the Babette.

On my mind this week:

1) Did anyone else notice, New Yorkers have an extreme fondness for black cars, and it goes way beyond car, government, or secret service vehicles.

2) The tents at Bryant Park were crazy, now I understand why they have an open bar.

3) The line at the Whole Foods in NY’s Union Square is CRAZY!! A man walks around the store with a sign indicating where the end of the line is, wtf?!! And the lines are color coded corresponding to a monitor that hangs from the ceiling, which then indicates when it’s your turn, by a dropping dot. I felt like I was at a cattle ranch, and naturally I got confused. I mistakenly took someone else's turn, and screwed up the flow and timing of the lines, and at that point, how could I look back at a crowd of irritated New Yorkers?!! Can you believe all that just for 10 pieces of brown rice sushi! Oh hell no.

4) Being in New York on 9/11 was strange. This year I turned thirty, so of course there was no other option than to celebrate this momentous occasion. July, I decided was gonna be the month to do it up, and to do it up proper; a final farewell to my twenties, which has been a decade of enduring challenges, valuable lessons, and enriching relationships.

Oh the parties.…..there was Reina’s birthday party with DJ Zita at Vessel. There was the Best of the East Bay Express party at the Oakland Museum with me, Liz, and Ryan, which was utter over the top over stimulating fun and included performances by Hottub, a breakdance competition, booths of every festival thing imaginable, and mysterious metaphysical elixir testing. There was the Hottub Addias store party and insanely fun impromptu jam session afterparty at Jen’s. Spent Bastille Day at Death Guild and hula hooped at Annie’s Social a week later. The Illiteracy It’s Pop It’s Art art show with the Miss Crew ladies, Gabriella, Liz, and Alex at the Gray Walls Gallery was good lady-bonding fun, followed by some outrageous behavior and hysterical dancing at July’s Bootybassment.

The CB2 Store opening party with Dan, Dee, Teddy, Adrian, Alex, Vince, Wheeler, and Arthur David was a really chill and happy event, felt like we were kickin’ it in someone’s very well lit living room.

Finally, there was my work event at the W. All the festivities have left me feeling good, but a little tired, and have been somewhat stressed, since I found out I have two cysts in one of my breasts, hopefully and probably non-cancerous, but won’t know more until I have the mammogram and sonogram next week. Interesting enough though, Dan F. is doing research on the aging process with worms and says in his lab findings; the microorganisms actually live longer when subjected to stressful environments cause their survival skills are forced into protective action. This theory is interesting, maybe with all the stress I will live to see 3 more dirtaaaay thirtaaaaay birthday parties!

On my mind this week:

1. Just got the memo: The amber colored wall art in Out the Door SF is actually panes of glass filled with honey. Who would have known…hmmm, I wonder if they ever get ants...

2. God is sushi. The Ritsu Roll at Blowfish Sushi TDF

Paula took me to Blowfish Sushi To Die For, and their Ritsu Roll was indeed TDF as was their oyster shooter in sake, and Peach Nympho Nigori sake cocktail. For dessert, we headed to Citizen Cake where we munched on a variety of sweet confections, my favorite of the bunch was the molasses ginger cookie, since I tend to have a Japanese palate (not partial to super sugary tastes).

3. My mom used to always say in the nineties, “Nirvana is playing, why don’t you go see them.”

I feel slightly nauseous when I watch this, only because this performance is so amazing, and I know I’ll never be able to experience what no longer exists.
Sigh, if only I had listened to my mother.

3. Thanks again to all my homies, Hottub and PJ Pooterhoots, and the Uptown for making my birthday party at Le Heat so damn awesome last week. And this dizzying time in heels was spent doing the following activities: Dance – Bootybassment with the BB Crew, Deathguild and Type O Negative show with Colin; Birthdays – Gemma & Gia, Brandan, Aimee, Danny; Miscellaneous – O’Reilly’s Oyster Festival with Wes, Steve, Adrian and friends, All Night Mission Jazz Rave with Elizabeth, Derek, and the Frenchies, Laney flea excursions, Computer Rock, Ruben performing with Gamelan Sekar Jaya at Yerba Buena Gardens, and Faith and Kevin’s wedding. Joey’s birthday party at Heinold’s First and Last Chance in Jack London (the really really old bar with the slanted floor) was an uber fantastic day of a birthday bonding in custom made “Nards and Bewbs” pics of Joey t-shirts for the party. It included a group cheeseburger attack satiated by ¼ lb. Burger Express on San Pablo, me having to regulate once again on some fools….well that is, one geriatric fool in a very inappropriate booty shorts jogging suit trying to steal the ice cream cone birthday cupcakes, then attribute his greed for taking two of the dwindling cupcakes to a retarded girl. Cupcake nazi perhaps, but then again I am Rodney’s daughter.

I randomly saw the Olympic Torch, which is particularly strange cause I don’t do sports and would never even stop to think about Olympian sports, but that day before I went into work, I just somehow knew I would see it. Jesse and I were standing on a corner of Van Ness talking when I turned and there it was. And I’ve eaten some very decadent meals in the past two months as well. Visits to Waterbar, Two, Townhall, Paxti’s, Mocca, and then ate 2 delicious lobster sandwiches; a lobster roll at North Beach Lobster Shack and a lobster club at the Rotunda. Yes, the past couple months have been so full of decadent delights…which are of course my absolute favorite.

On my mind this week:

1. The strangest thing happened to me the other day, but then again, I’m really never surprised by what happens to me. So while walking out of the bus terminal, and minding my own business of course, a homeless man lifted his leg and slowly nudged/kicked me with his foot. Stunned and speechless, I went about my commute.

2. Errico, the club is just not the same without you.

3. Sex and the City. You must go see the new Sex and the City movie if you haven’t done so already. The script is consistently funny, the story line is predictable, but capturing, and Patricia Field’s styling skills are stronger than ever.

4. Sexless genius is irreplaceable. R.I.P YSL. Yves Saint Laurent, my favorite fashion designer of all time, died at the beginning of the month in Paris. The world of fashion has suffered a terrible artistic loss. Yves Saint Laurent, master of the modern cut, keeper of class. We are only so lucky to have his legacy.

6. “Don’t touch them, they’re Chanel.”
He,he,he, he....so funny, Miss M.Editrix has said that one a few times...

7. Crumb character)

February was super low key socially, and all about self help...I helped myself to
some new Chanel glasses, a Marc Jacobs bag, a 1920’s celluloid hair comb with blue crystals I picked up at the White Elephant sale, and some tops for spring here and there. Also helped myself to a couple massages, which did wonders for my back, neck, and shoulders. March so far has been absolutely insane, but really fun, and somehow I have the flu again. So before getting sick, went to the Stork Club with Dee and Anna to see the Belles du Jour burlesque troop and the Gomorran Social Aid, and Pleasure Club show, and oh my god, it was such a good time, guess sometimes you just can’t really beat brass and burlesque, ya know. At the LW caught the Up and Down and caught up with my lovely lady friend Tee, who is moving to Hawaii at the end of the month. I’m sad to see her go, but am happy for her new adventure. Speaking of which, I’m quite overdue for one of those myself.

On my mind this week:

1. Tee I will miss you! And thank god, we are in the same network. I just got some new sunglasses, so I can come visit you on the island and not get blinded by that insane Hawaiian sun, and I’m counting on you to find all the good island eats….

he, he, he….Us on the beach in Hawaii, will be like this, sorta like us in the bars here….he, he, he…;)

2. Vitamin B-12 in liquid form is so amazing. Put it under your tongue for 30 seconds, then swallow. (kinda makes me feel like a teenager again) I highly recommend for anybody who is stressed or whose nervous system may be strained.

3. Yikes, the dirty thirty is coming up in a few months, and I have no idea what to do this year for my b-day…

4. I swear to god, I think I saw R. Crumb two weeks ago. It was a Thursday evening around 7:00 pm, and I had just gotten out of a massage…. So I was on the bus on my way home, when at Post and Montgomery a man caught my eye. In a sea of generic business suits and neo San Franciscan work attire, I saw this older gentleman with a rather large, but well groomed moustache wearing a boater and glasses, and a light colored suit. He definitely looked out of place, but it didn’t seem to faze him.
I was awestruck because the peculiarity of this person and of the moment, it was all so intense, and all together 100% voyeuristic; so selfishly stolen. It maybe lasted for 3 seconds, but it felt like slow motion. Then the thought struck me very randomly, two weeks later: That’s R. Crumb. I mean, after all he was a San Franciscan for many
many years…

http://youtube.com/watch?v=BmeodrEjpvo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlT4QZchxQw

Funny how most people think he’s a total dirt bag, and he very well may be. I think it’s fascinating and somewhat endearing how his sense of blatant honesty is so childlike in its defensiveness...It’s interesting. Brought in the new year at Bootybassment at Casanova with Errico, Julia, and their crews. Was a super fun party, definitely got my dance on hard enough for the next month or so. Then me, Dee and Christle had a good time running around Telegraph…felt like teenagers again, especially when I bought this lion hat at the Hat Store, inspired by Christle who bought a kitty cat version. Japanese New Year was filled with a great deal of family bonding and cooking, and catching up at La Pin with me, Dee, Liz, Danny, and Errico, was a hoot. The fun came to an abrupt stop as the January rainstorms catalyzed a most horrific flu, as one afternoon I spent four hours working in sopping wet clothes. However, just hours before getting sick, I enjoyed a superbly delicious chacuterie plate at Spruce with work, and enjoyed Anna’s Moving/Lars’ Welcoming party, which was cheery mingly fun.

Between coughing attacks and foggy brain activity due to being overmedicated with cold medicines, made it out to the Tiki Bar to celebrate Tee’s birthday, and made it out to LA to visit my dear friends, Christine and Sergio in their new North Highland Park house. LA was fun of course, but low key, and a bit challenging considering we were all sick. We did make it out to see the Murakami exhibit at the MOCA, which was on the level of mind blowing incredible. To see his artwork in person and to be able to appreciate the scale, and immense detail, and the genius colorization of his pieces was absolutely awe inspiring. My favorites being, the Reversed Double Helix sculpture and a study on his work process pieced together with scotch tape, swatched with color chips. Tried Pink Berry frozen yoghurt which made me violently ill and then vomit. So it was definitely a trip of artistic highs and health related lows. This past weekend, finally made it out to the LW with Dee and Gerald, and then Sophie cooked an amazing dinner of chili with a subtle, yet strong heat, a green salad with persimmons, and pistachio rice pudding infused with rosewater. I’m totally my happiest when eating, and I’m so lucky to have such good friends to share their foodie love!!

And lunch food seems to be this week’s theme. Dee and I had Petite Robert the other day (best French onion soup ever!) and Jesse came with me to a tasting for work at Ducca today (ambiance and service great! Food, okay).
So after an entire month of being sick, I’m happy to say my health is fine now, my hair is feeling nice as it’s a little cooler and darker, freshly cut and dyed, and I have a couple new pairs of shoes, and some new fancy glasses in transit, so I’m good…well for now. ;)

On my mind this week:

1. Since people hustling me on the street for money has become such a problem in the city, I’ve adopted an Ugly-Betty like approach when it comes to commuting to work; nondescript parka, comfy shoes, an odd head covering…Yep, as the economy gets gradually worse, my outerwear outfits are gonna have to get worse...and more creative as well – hello hobo chic – or should I say hello, “Derelicte!”.

2. There is this new Southwest commercial that has a really amped up dog chasing it tail. When our dog hears this commercial, she goes get all riled up, and lets out these quick territorial barks. It’s really funny, and even sillier to think a million other people must be experiencing something like this too…come to think of it, that is a very strong weapon of mass media. Hmmmm…some crazy person will invent a way to have animals turn on human beings through subliminal messages implanted in TV commercials and internet pop-ups. Yep, mass media and our pets could potentially destroy us all.

3.

And so he butchers the lyrics a bit….but only Trent Reznor could cover Billy Idol and do him proper justice. I think it’s perfect just as it is.

4. Public transit yesterday, (Valentine’s Day), was like a breeding ground for sketch comedy writing.

I saw a tranny that looked like Kelly from Shoes, but somewhat taller. She stood on the bus with a desperately bored expression. She even had the fingerless gloves on, but red and pink striped ones.

Then, within minutes, I was subjected to the most unpleasant auditory experience I think I’ve ever had. From the back of the bus, came a LOUD, wet, nasally voice; a tone of voice with an inappropriate emphasis on each word’s last consonant, and whose carriage was as banal as the words being formed from it. It was creepy and drooly sounding, and people were turning around to see what kind of human being was responsible for the horrible sounds they were hearing. Now during this woman’s painfully dull conversation with her mother I heard, “Oh there are tents pitched in the park at Union Square. They must be having an event there. Yes they must be serving dinner in the tents….. People are gonna start asking me if the store sells fly swatters soon cause it’s that time of the year, and I always tell them we don’t have them. No one really sells fly swatters anymore….. My parents, oh my Mom will cook for my Dad and they’ll eat dinner in front of the TV for Valentine’s Day, catch some late night television and go to sleep…..I’m going to Borders for the next 2 hours cause I LOVE Borders.” And with that, right in front of Borders on Powell, she was gone and the #2 bus was filled with silent relief.

I totally took the asshole card on this one as I tried to capture her voice on my phone’s video camera. Was a failed attempt, and for karma’s sake I’m sure. It’s just crazy how they make people like that.

5. Watched Jesus Camp with Sophie, Jesse, and Patrick the other night. Super disturbing….Like the Hitler Youth, but sloppily dressed.

See, church should be fun, not filled with scared, crying children…
(not really a big Valor fan, but still love this song, it's so dancey, I couldn’t resist!)

6. “Big Louis Vuitton”….limited edition purchase, I did not make at the Murakami exhibit, my willpower was tested, and it was incredibly hard…and while I was looking at the bag, it just didn’t feel right. Started with the Surface Magazine Avantguardian party, pre-Thanksgiving drinks at the LW, Computer Rock at Laslzo’s with Liz to see Ryan and Justin spin. Melinda’s cocktail/Capp’s birthday party was fun, then sat for two photoshoots in Marie Antoinette gear for the Dee. Went to the FIDM alumni Holiday party at Etiquette, had my work holiday party/event at Azie which included seeing Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza. Bought a cool and creepy (my favorite combo)
Pinocchio Sculpture by Alexander Bell at the Creative Growth Art sale. Saw the Up and Down and the Struts play a show, and made gingerbread houses with the fam. Liz’s annual karaoke birthday party was riotous fun as always, and Christmas was full of holiday cheer and good eats, great gifts, and more karaoke. Also got a new mattress this month, and am getting the best sleep I’ve had in many years, which I feel is an excellent way to end 2007. Speaking of which, it was a productive year. My job works, my shoe collection has doubled, dated a bit, and being the Misscrew Beauty Editor has been great fun, so things have made a nice progression. Hopefully 2008 will be a copious year full of happiness, good luck, love and well being, and also of course, smiley faces, unicorns, rainbows, Marc Jacobs and cashmere.

On my mind this week:

1.
It’s not the Christmas holiday for the Kwan girls without some of this:

2. Liz came over and helped me trim my tree and apparently, according to her, I have naughty ornaments that like to twist around, and not face forwards, and apparently we need “little mini ornament whips” to keep them in line...he, he, he, I’m so lucky to have silly friends!!

4.

I really like this video. Started with drinks at the Tiki bar with Ruben and Ryan, then later with Jenny, Matt and Darrel, and drinks also at the LW, and some La Pin with Tee. Anna’s birthday party at Joaquin Miller was a good time, learned how to play croquet despite the rave going on next to us (they actually had a PA system! Wtf?!), which decimated Joey’s plan for croquet and picnicking to 60’s French pop. Bootybassment that same night with the homies, Danny and Errico, and then more late night Lapin. Did a tasting at Azie for work with David; all I have to say is their Kobe beef skewers are like heaven on a stick, and then went to the glam.com event at Etiquette with Misscrewers, Gabriella and Liz. Went to the LW’s Halloween party as Rachel from Bladerunner, deciding Barbarella will get her debut next Halloween. The earthquake a few nights ago had me and Dee hugging in my bedroom doorway like two scared orphans. Hmm, maybe next year we can be Siamese twins or something for Halloween……Went to the De Young with Dee and Ingrid to check out the Nan Kempner exhibit, my favorite pieces included her gold Yves Saint Laurent bubble cape, the Gres dresses, the Halston feather jacket, and a harlequin leather jacket trimmed with mink.

After had tea at Ritual and then ate dinner at Luka’s for the first time in ages. The Chow Nasty house costume/birthday party was a blast and included a dance party, and an impromptu show. One more birthday party to go and I’m officially done birthdaying for this week...Okay, I’m ready for silent retreat time and my aromatherapy now.

On my mind this week:

1. Was so glad to make it out to the last Bootybassment! Always a great party and always guaranteed to run into familiar faces!! I got my dance on hard, thanks to Dimitri, and the homeboys, Danny and Errico, and as evidenced by the condition of my shoes the next morning…and my shirt (bartender split three drinks on it, which usually gets me kinda riled, but I was having so much fun I wasn’t even trippin’!!)

2. The Dee and I and Danny too apparently got caught up watching the PBS documentary on Charles Shulz the other night….by the end of the documentary we were both in tears..... The man was the cleverest storyteller and an absolute genius when it came to dialogue, and his sense of humor was extremely sharp as well. It’s unfortunate his personal life had been so problematic.

3. mmmmmmmm, good ol’ Beethoven.

4. Our Juanita’s sessions are the best! Errico, Elizabeth, Danny, me, and now my sis all converge in the back of the restaurant for our meetings far, far away from any children…I swear, if those walls could talk.

5. I ordered new business cards for myself the other day and was totally reminded of this…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoIvd3zzu4Y

6.

This performance of Heartbeats is so incredible...even better than the recorded version….what the hell was I doing, why didn’t I go to this show?!!!?!

7. Not a bad horoscope for this week:
You’re a star—and so am I. I’m a genius—and so are you. Your success encourages my brilliance, and my charisma enhances your power. Your victory doesn’t require my defeat, and vice versa. Those are the rules in the New World—quite unlike the rules in the Old World, where zero-sum games are the norm, and only one of us can win each time we play.

In the New World, you don’t have to tone down or apologize for your prowess, because you love it when other people shine. You exult in your own excellence without regarding it as a sign of inherent superiority. As you ripen more and more of your latent aptitude, you inspire the rest of us to claim our own idiosyncratic magnificence.Crazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2679548348850466524.post-8108471485402911602007-10-15T21:36:00.000-07:002009-05-05T23:48:07.771-07:00Thieves Like Us…October 15, 2007 - Mood: CuriousBeing sick put a quick halt to the type of serial socializing I had been
doing the past few weeks. Was feeling all stir crazy; indoors, congested, and coughing for days on end, so when I started to get my sense of smell back, went to Lanesplitter and the Parkway with Sara, Jason, and Dee to see Fightclub. Later that week, ended up out with Julia, Trang, and Dee at Easy, then at Lucky Lounge in Lakeshore, and then did late night at La Pinata, again. Wellness saw me off to the Folsom Street Fair with Dee, Gerald, and Steven. Last week was a very intense and busy week, work was crazy and my Dad’s 60th birthday party planning took up any free time I had in between. The party itself was a definite success, a Chinese banquet with 50 birthday song party poppers, leis, gummy worms & Swedish fish goodie bags, and life-size sea creature toys. My Dad and the family had a blast, and I was happy that they had such a good time. This past week saw taco truck and brown bagging bonding with Danny and Liz. Worst part of the week was when I pulled a muscle in my shoulder while sleeping, so bending my neck and using my right arm was pretty much out of the question for a few days, but I'm bck to better now, think I was healed by the power of the homemade churro....Hallelujah!! I’m back.

On my mind this week:

1. Sorry to have missed Sophie’s back to School party. Lungs weren’t giving out hall passes that night. Homemade cookies, milk, cocktails…..wahhhh! :(

2. The exhibit was 10,000% amazing, and a good reminder of how lighting can make or break a situation, my favorite being the “Room for all Colors” . Actually come to think of it, it sorta reminded me of that scary Bill Viola exhibit they had back in ’99, but without the sound element…wow, a reference to nineties art…someone is getting old. Besides all that, the installations were great, however falling down the MOMA stairs while trying to say hi to Sara and Leia in front of hundreds of people, and getting scolded by the docents was not so great. Think it’s time I reassess my dwindling habit of stiletto wear, and get my act together. Then there was the Roadside Distractions photography art show at the Hideo Wakamatsu Mission Store opening, with Kissui in abundance (and not usually a rice alcohol drinker) and no dinner, apparently brings out guest appearances from hers truly, M.Editrix, according to Dee, Adrian, and M.I.S.S. Liz. Later that week with M.I.S.S. Liz was the Emily the Strange art show, where the Bride of Ozzy performance was inspirational. Again, I swear 111 Minna is just a vortex of weird energy, there we were stalked by a guy who told me my glasses looked like they cost $2, and Liz got her nameplate necklace out of a candy machine. Hmmm Let's see, negative attention, scary eye contact, and sarcastic remarks, wow what a charmer. Bet he beats his ladies too. Drinks at the LW and breakfast at Mama’s to welcome Christle back for all of 48 hours.Tamale making night hosted by Joey and Anna, where it was once again reiterated that bacon and cheese make everything delicious, and Carlo Rossi is like a biting hug from a long lost friend. Dee’s karaoke birthday party at Do Re Mi was insanely wild fun, highlights include dancing on the table, Brandan’s delicious red velvet and fresh berry cake, Adrian the party animal, and 30 people packed in one karaoke room the size of small college dorm. Flea market last Sunday, plus this week’s Chicken and Waffles with Liz, Carlo’s birthday party/Up & Down show at Annie’s Social, then hanging out in the back of the LW with the folks and a puppy has left me violently ill, but I suppose I kinda earned this one.

On my mind this week:

1. “Elizabeth darling, oh how I LOVE this hot sauce…mwah, kissy, kissy…” , oh Kissui…

2. It’s really wrong…I ate La Pinata three times in two weeks, and I think I’m gonna die if I don’t get a chile relleno from Mexicali Rose soon...

3. We (myself, Dee, Joey, and Cash Gift too apparently) are patiently waiting for someone on the Youtube to upload some of the old Streetlight Records commercials….Please hurry cause “I’m bored with Madonna.”
Speaking of Madonna…

4. This is by far the funniest thing I’ve seen on the internet in a while, it’s even funnier when the Dee does an interpretive reading of it. Found it on Amazon while researching Swedish Fish for my Dad’s 60th Birthday Party we’re planning.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful:
Chewy Perfection, February 11, 2007
By C.P. Cavafy - See all my reviews

I used to purchase Swedish Fish at the CVS Pharmacy for many years, but the store switched to the smaller fish, which are not nearly as good in texture. When evaluating a Swedish fish, the most important thing is freshness. You want fish that are as fresh as possible, i.e., furthest away from their expiration date (you can check the expiration code through the manufacturer Cadbury Adams). Well, Candy Depot just delivered the freshest Swedish fish I ever had -- just the right chewiness and bursting with flavor that no other gummy candy can match. Older Swedish fish get a bit stiff and are harder to chew. The intensity of the flavor diminishes as well. The assorted fish flavors are lemon (yellow), lime (green), orange (orange), and berry (red). Many people prefer only the red Swedish Fish because its flavor is sublime and difficult to describe; some people think the flavor is strawberry, others cherry, and even loganberry. No matter what, the Red Swedish Fish are the Holy Grail of non-chocolate candy. Although you can purchase a bag with just red fish, I prefer the assorted variety because I like the contrast in flavors, and you can progress in taste up to the red. When eating a Swedish Fish, no filleting is required; however, there is an art to it. Personally, I like to nip off the tail and then eat the body. Sometimes, I will roll up the fish from the tail end and eat it like a miniature jelly roll. But my special technique is reserved for a pair of red fish. I sandwich the two fish belly-to-belly, then I bite off the double tail, then I pop the double body into my mouth for a full burst of flavor. Delicious. Yes, I may seem strange, but I come from a competitive family where we used to have jelly bean wars. We would pair up the jelly beans, then we would "go to war" by holding each jelly bean between each forefinger and thumb, then smash the two together until one end of the losing jelly bean would cave in. These battles would continue in a single elimination tournament until one bean emerged victorious. I hope you enjoyed this review and your Swedish Fish from Amazon.
Comment | Was this review helpful to you? My sense of direction has temporarily worsened due to a weak eyeglasses prescription, which clearly wreaks havoc on my already weak sense of direction and perpetual state of dishevelment. Yet despite everything, I managed to do a hearty amount of well manicured socializing, mostly in the east bay setting. So my new place to nerd out is the Hob Nob, which used to be a kind of bizarre jazz bar/restaurant in Alameda, but now is a mecca for young and old nerds alike, providing a healthy supply of booze and board games within a semi-nice local setting. The Kwan kids rather like it on Thursdays since they have a $3 drink happy hour from 10pm to midnight, and last week included an intense game of scrabble, arm wrestling, and extreme connect four. There were a couple visits to the LW and Radio, and a pillaging of the popcorn machine over at the Lucky 13. Back in the city, enjoyed a delicious dinner at Maverick for Sophie's birthday with her, Jesse, Dan, and Gail, and I have to say, my fried chicken was cooked to perfection; tender, yet crisp, and impeccably seasoned, and on a bed of mashed potatoes. I told Miss Liz the next time we get our thrift on at Thriftown, which is kiddie corner, we have to have a lady date there. So the Labor Day weekend included some home redecorating and TLC, babysitting, couple BBQs – pretty low key cause the next few weeks will be action packed.

On my mind this week:

1. Everytime I see my friend Carlo, he says, “I know you’ve got to be at least one of the three: hungry, tired, or having to pee.” I am realizing now these are the effects of me always being in a constant state of over stimulation.

2. Yet another person on a bike took me by surprise on Market Street this week…

3.

Legos are so the new black.

4.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX4aM3y3ZRY
And they say computers are dangerous…

5.

My Dad makes up words too…my favorite of late is poisionated, e.g. “I don’t want to get poisionated by that confetti." Started with the LW and breakfast at Mama’s, then dinner bonding over too much red wine with Edwin, Dee, Sarah and I at La Mediterranee. There was the Glam.com SF blogger mixer at Bacar, where myself, and Misscrew founders Liz and Gabriella met a variety of other fashion bloggers including Natalie of The Coveted, http://thecoveted.blogspot.com/, and Janine of Coquette coquette.blogs.com/ , and Stephanie from Stiletto Jungle, who were all very kind and interesting. Popped over to the Stork club with Liz and Errico for the Oakland Art Mumur to see Hottub who put on an awesome performance, with Errico doing it right by joining in with the girls. There was cousin Steph’s wedding, and Kira’s west coast visit. Thanks god, we got our dog Wing, Wing back. Turns out some neighbors had borrowed her for a few days...Anna made Dee and I a very tasty breakfast Sunday complete with a frittata, freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade coffee cake, and a trip to the flea market. Just got home from Vegas a few days ago and can’t tell you how happy I am to come home to lukewarm weather. Hallelujah!!!!

On my mind this week:

1. My stylist tried something new with my color, it now has these pieces that have an old-lady type purple tint to it, but then again I think it’s quite fitting cause my friends and my mom have always called me an old lady…

2. Surely there are laws against the amount of red meat I’ve consumed in the past two weeks.

3. The Bay Area is so small. It’s crazy and kinda amazing how you run into people….expectedly and unexpectedly.

5. M.I.S.S. Liz delivered by birthday present the other night. And it was so good that I’m not having my raincheck birthday party anymore…well, at least not for now. Thanks, you really are the bestest life partner!… ;)

6. I know about Hamburger Eyes, but I heard the funniest reference the other day to hamburgers and the part of the female anatomy above the waist.

7.

More than just a hairstyle.

LA is Pandora’s box.

Jewelry does this to me too…Crazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2679548348850466524.post-83860084054366958862007-07-24T22:59:00.000-07:002009-05-05T23:56:47.601-07:00Animal Control….July 24, 2007 - Current Mood: SnackyIt’s been non-stop since the 4th of July – and the month is already almost over! Started with Drew’s 4th of July BBQ and mini D.I.Y. fireworks show. Then Reina’s b-day party at Levende with Errico & the Misscrewers, and Liz and Danny joining in at 3am for Mexican breakfast bonding. Then there was Sara’s Planes, Trains, Automobiles themed housewarming party – where I observed a cycle of very young almost hipster kids trying to be too cool for school but desperately an uncomfortably not quite making the mark. Low point of observation is when I heard someone state they had to go “check on their playlist” to make sure it stayed with the theme of the party and would be devastated if a mismatched song made it in ……There was Kevin’s 30th b-day BBQ, and the most interesting part of the night happened to be when James was walking Kelly and I to Bart and Alfie the Troll Window man at 18th and Valencia waved to me and opened his window and gave us a private 10 minute interview, which I found absolutely fascinating. http://www.sftrollwindow.blogspot.com/ . Watched Grey Gardens a documentary made in the 70s about the ever reclusive and eccentric mother/daughter duo, the Edie Bouvier Beales, living in their dilapidated East Hampton 28 room mansion. The Chow Nasty album release party at the Independent was incredibly fun, and then Chow Nasty kick off tour BBQ at the house was a good time full of good eats (chicken apple sausage stuffed with gouda and bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers were the hit dishes). Did a lot of shopping this week, had a happy birthday massage. My Vessel Hip Hop birthday party got postponed due to a change in plans, and my cousin’s bachelorette party was a great celebratory time, nails did, dinner, dancing, perks being a room at the Clift and some large Hermes gift boxes I’ll use for storage that I found in its hallway.

On my mind this week:

1. I had no idea lap dances were given at the Independent. I was seated on a chair after the Chow Nasty show, when my sister yelled out jokingly, “This girl needs a lapdance!” and a Sam came over and gave me a pretty good one.

2.

How does your garden grow?

3.
From this………….

To this…

To this……

…….is genius at work. God bless Malcolm Mclaren.

4. The Kwans are sad cause our family dog, Wing, Wing is missing. She got out of the yard Friday night and hasn’t been seen since. One family bridal shower, father’s day breakfasts, brunches, birthdays and dinners, then hung out with my cousins and their baby. There was Lindsey’s birthday party then Melinda's house warming party – the place is cavernous, full of massive stained glass windows, and some even being rumored to have come from the Liberace estate…..It’s really very otherworldly, and it ate my car keys and made Tee and I completely lose track of time, the sober chatter going way into the wee, wee hours of the morning. Saw my hair stylist Edwin at Hermosa in Berkeley, then me, him, and Dee went to see Shrek III, which was very much on the cute side as expected. Puss n' Boots used to be my favorite, but I think Gingy has taken the cake….Stayed home this weekend to do my chores and rest up for the next month or so, which will be absolute mayhem, but of the most positive kind of course.

on my mind this week:

1. Where the hell am I gonna do my birthday party?!!!! Need a place on specified dates with no cover, not too bourgsie, with a dancefloor, good music, in a reasonably safe location, with enough space to accommodate the party…. So please any suggestions are very much appreciated!!!

2. I see a lot of interesting things on my commute. Lately I’ve been fascinated by the following:

The Skeleton Lady - You can tell she is a professional of some sort, I see her on my bus ride in walking up Sutter. Poor thing, she clearly has an eating disorder. Everytime I see her, it reminds me of why it is okay to eat and even justifies some of my overindulgent eating behaviors. Her skin looks like it sliding off her face and her body – it has nothing to hold onto. She wears white orthopedic sneakers and carries a Louis Vuitton Alma bag. I wonder what she eats for lunch. I wonder if she even eats lunch…

Highlighter Boy - Every morning he looks like he is on a scavenger hunt. It never fails; he fervently crosses off items on a notepad while walking up Sutter, and ALWAYS with a highlighter. Sometimes pink, sometimes yellow - guess it depends on his mood. The day he uses a black Sharpie, I’ll have the fear of God in me, or something like that.

3. This is why I need to take my ass dancing………

4. Lost my cell phone for 12 hours earlier this week, but was lucky enough to have a very kind stranger pick it up and return it to me, which was such a relief. This past week was oodles of fun, and the party was definitely not over at The Party is Over, Joey and Craig’s art opening and Joey’s birthday celebration at Mission 17. Mosied on over to the Coppola’s house party across the street, remembering that I do indulge in Malibu Rum and cokes once in a while, then headed over to 111 Minna to see Misscrewer DJ Zita (who played a really awesome mash up set!!) spin at the Juxtapoz Magazine party with the Misscrew posse (Liz, Gabriella & Ali, Reina) + Danny, Errico, Jake, and Josh. So kinda fucked up shit has been happening to me at 111 Minna lately, whose selection of DJs and security I’m more of a fan of compared to its bizarro crowd, a mix of 40% decent, 20% cool, and 40% absolutely horrible patrons, of which I will spare you the gory descriptive details of cause it’s not worth the time, and I’m sure you’re already quite aware of if you go there. So anyhow, the other night we went to support Misscrewer DJ Zita, and while dancing a couple things happened to my dismay…….firstoff, this total tool of a dude asked if he could wear the fluorescent surfer printed vintage Speedo jacket I was wearing, I told him no, then I felt bad, so I let him dance it in for a brief moment, but then his drunk ass had the audacity to go into my purse, a complete stranger!, and wear my jacket again after I had asked for it back, which is when I lost my patience……I’m generally a very nice person, but when provoked, all hell will break loose - I had to punk him for having no manners, and his female friend for allowing his totally disrespectful behavior, and I would have really tried to beat his ass if further agitated. Thank God Errico stepped in to regulate….So it’s been an interesting week full of better and restful sleep (been making myself work out again), insightful observations and thoughts, nonsensical bedtime conversations with my homegirls, Tee and Liz, and psychic dreams about jewelry.

On my mind this week:

1. It’s really not cool, and very rude and assuming when complete strangers, and total douche bags at that, barge their way into our dance circle, when the boys leave. Oh hell no.
2. Food poisoning from deli Tabbouleh salad is not a good party.

3.

(Part starts at 5:07)- Haahhhaaa, leotards rule! Think I just seen Sporty Spice.....

4. I have a friend named Gerald, and every time the Dee and I see him, we now use our 1920s voices and hand gestures as if grappling a speakeasy martini…..”Ha ha ha…..Gerald…”

5. Damn, what is cooler than Jeff Bridges, I dunno...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCZhAPMfZAU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieDBRuk8yaYCrazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2679548348850466524.post-57383908414565625702007-05-30T17:31:00.000-07:002009-05-06T21:04:08.916-07:00M.I.S.S. Demeanors……May 30, 2007 Current Mood – UnrulyThe past couple weeks have been filled with marathon socializing. Started with the O’Reilly’s Oyster festival last week, really wonderful to have our annual visits from Steve and Steph, and Wes and Jessica, and so good to finally have met Brie, and to hang out with Jesse and Sophie, Adrian, Dan, Edwin, and the Dee and the rest of the crews. It was a crazy good time, starting with the car ride over, and included some intense establishment hopping, karaoke and dancing, and ended with last call at the LW. Later in the week, I went to see the Giants for a media work related event, and then Dee and I did sister bonding at the De Young, catching the Vivienne Westwood exhibit and purchased some very cute earrings (Swarovski crystal skull and crossbones) of hers as well. Had drinks at the LW with Tee, and then Danny’s Dirty Thirty/Moving Away BBQ party was pretty hardcore, like 10 hours straight of hanging out and catching up with old friends, and then finally catching the office cold I’ve been dodging for two weeks now.

On my mind this week:

1. I think I should be allowed to enjoy my Friday afternoon and talk excitedly to old friends on public transportation, however there is a bus Nazi who thinks otherwise.

2. There is nothing more awkward than a very drunk person trying to kiss you that you’re not really sure you want to kiss. Closed eyed, lips puckered in the air approaching like bombs on televised radar. Not good.

3. I’ve started the planning for my birthday party. Hope it will be at least this much fun!

4. I almost cried when I saw the Vivienne Westwood exhibit, but stopped myself out of the fear of looking like one of those crazy Michael Jackson fanatics, but now I think I kinda get them...anyhow, you must see it before it leaves the De Young on June 10th, and pssssst! It’s only $5 when you show a BofA card!!!

5. Tee told me last night she is convinced I’m gonna marry some sort of royalty and become a European socialite, but I think I’m much too much a rebel for this sort of behavior. I’d take the shoes though any day. Anyhow, I’m more like these guys:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWiilrBq9vw

6. Although, I think I’m just about due for one of these……
Crazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2679548348850466524.post-7957017609406948672007-05-16T20:05:00.000-07:002007-05-16T20:51:02.831-07:00Mi vida loca…..May 16, 2007 Current Mood – Earrings not jingling at the moment :(The Chow Nasty show on Cinco de Mayo at the WC was a good time. Sugar and Gold were really good too. I was impressed. Good to see old friends and new – hadn’t been there since that crazy Halloween party in 2004 when me and Brandon dressed up as Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, and then the other Ghostown happening was not so happy. Someone totaled my Dad’s car in front of his shop on MLK – he had to dive out of the speeding car’s way, and then the jerk took off on foot. It’s amazing he wasn’t seriously injured, and just another reason to buy a trusty Camry. Then on the other side of Oakland, Liz, Errico, Danny and I did taco truck bonding, over ceviche and lengua tacos. Brandan and Chris’ birthday BBQ extravaganza at Dolores Park was ever-so-much fun, and happy to know my blue raspberry jello shots were a hit among the fellas! Then Evelyn’s wine tasting party after was a hoot and very educational, learning that Red Truck pinot noir is an extremely versatile wine at a good value ($10 for 2005 bottle)…..So I’m pretty tired this week, and apparently I have highly allergic tissue in my eyes, and I will soon have some not so attractive Calvin Klein riveted lens titanium computer glasses to help them out, and that you will never ever see me in, thank god - but I will also have me some new stunnas too, so I’m pretty excited, and excited for this weekend’s Oyster festival!

On my mind this week:

1. So many Taurus/Geminis and so little time!!! I’m really trying, I promise!!
2. I love it that Tee is a like a little baby! Oh honey, your poor ears!! Kooo, gurgle, gurgle…
3. The M.I.S.S. Crew got a hot new look for summer!! Check it out: misscrew.com
4. Muni is an interesting place, especially when you’re trying not to make eye contact with someone who was with the ninny who thought you were a man. As you can see this is still a very sensitive subject.
5. Goat milk brie is absolutely delicious at room temperature, and is only $3 a wheel, so get it fast before your local TJs sells out or discontinues it.

6. Too bad the narration on this trailer is kinda horrible, but it looks like it’s gonna be an excellent movie. I love Edith Piaf, I’m so excited!!! It will be hard to wait until it comes out June 8th!!

7. That night I wore my red leather Thriller jacket and hoochie red leather pumps with 90’s bling buckles, so my attention span was not happening cause my Michael Jackson dance moves in inappropriate places were,..,..Went to the Mallard for a sec after, then ended up at the LW for last call….Liz and I decided to get lunch at the flea market Sunday, which for me consisted of a pork tamale, a lengua taco, and two scoops of Mexican ice cream in a waffle cone. Ran walked Denise’s two very hyper, Beagles, and got a house tour, and finally got to bear witness to the Robles’ “million dollar” bathroom. Ended up at the Hush Hush the other night night with Dee, Sara, Jason, Ida, and Kelly, which was kinda like bizarro night there. First, I walked in on a group of unfriendly fortysomethings doing coke in the bathroom cause they didn’t bother to lock the door. Then these same people were celebrating a birthday with full on, bare buttocks on the bar, birthday spankings...it was a bit of a disturbing sight - total birth control!!

On my mind this week:

1. Coincidences are weird and sorta funny....and so many lately that it’s kinda spooky...

2. There was no Michelle and Liz booties at this month’s Bootybassment, so come May there will be some double, triple, quadruple, quintuple, sextuple trouble on the Knockout’s dancefloor that’s for sure!!!

3. For someone who is quite cryptic, I take what people say very literally because I am extremely gullible.

4. Despite yesterday’s snack with Dee and Joey, I’m still having my Wienerschnitzel attack!!

5. I forgot Beyonce had a last name...Dee thought this was funny...

6. Theresa and Liz, you ladies are throwing off my schedule!! See what happens when
I miss you guys!!

7. Opening sequence to The Hunger

Add to My Profile | More Videos

Hats are so hot right now...

8....umm I actually own a couple versions of this outfit....

I found it, and it’s more fabulous than I had even imagined! Thanks Joey!! ;)Crazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2679548348850466524.post-33594762344040857492007-04-17T00:27:00.000-07:002009-05-06T21:10:46.181-07:00Real trannies don’t have hips…April 17, 2007 - Current mood: ContentThe past couple weeks of extreme socializing have left me exhausted, but very happy and strangely somehow healthy. Started with Moua’s birthday party, then 111 Minna after where this random guy decided to sit next to me, and what happened next still has me feeling a bit traumatized. (Keep in mind here I was wearing a very fitted vintage sixties cocktail dress, in silk crepe, a kind of fabric that clings to the hips, and the same amount of make-up I always wear.) So he kept asking me how old I was, which I told him, then he kept telling me I looked 22, said I had a nice face, then asked me if I was a girl…and THEN proceeded to buy me a drink that I didn’t ask for, that was 50% correct in body because he didn’t let me finish my sentence. And then kept saying over and over that we should go to Vessel…then this guy got freaked out by Ryan, thought he was my boyfriend, saying he gave him the evil eye….This is when Liz and I kindly made our escape to the dancefloor thanks to Dylan the DJ who saved us with New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle, which was actually quite representative of that very awkward and ill-fated moment. Later in the week there were drinks at the LW with Theresa, Ryan P., Jenny, Jeff, Dee, Melinda, Amy….Then Gia and Gemma’s bounce house Tinkerbell birthday party across the street at Dean and Rene’s … Actually had to do the party in 2 shifts with a nap in between. On Easter, decorated Easter eggs with the fam, enjoying Easter brunch, and Easter dinner and ate, and ate and ate. After Easter more amazing meals followed, and included a wonderful dinner of Chinese Oxtail soup and Toro (fatty tuna) and Korean BBQ in West O with the fam, Thai Osha with Mei, and Ruby Skye for a media work related event (Harrah’s/ Harvey’s Lake Tahoe) and enjoyed a nice mini cabaret show and buzz that I took with me later to an art show in Jack London.

On my mind this week:

1. I have yet to go there, but Vessel does not look fun. Not my idea of a hyphy time. For work however, David and I are considering maybe planning a corporate event there.
2. People slang all sorts of stuff at the Laney college flea market, but last Sunday was the first time we were approached with Chiuauas….so painfully cute, and a painful $250 a pop…er a pup! Have you ever met my friend corny Collins…..
3. Bootybassment is sooooo on on Saturday!!! Yess!!! I’m so EXCITED I already know what pants I’m gonna wear!!!!
4. The best part of the week though was when M.I.S.S. Liz informed me of a write up my Sunday M.I.S.S. Crew Beauty blog posting received on the Around the Way Girls blog, which is awesome and informative in the ways of fashion and pop culture. Really feels good to know people enjoy and appreciate what I do. Thanks so much Radio Rose!!
http://aroundthewaygirls.blogspot.com/2007/04/vapor-rub-for-your-feet.html

5. The flea market was crazy yesterday. Something funny I overheard was:
I had said outloud to my sister, “It smells like pot right here.” Passing right next to us was a middle aged couple. The wife said, “It smells like a skunk.” The husband replied, “That’s not a skunk, that’s grass.” Guess you had to be there.

6. Jungle juice and the bounce house are a very fun, yet tiring combination, and is best when you live across the street.

7. I LOVE this video cause it’s so cute, and Peaches is so much fun, and our Joey is in it too…And JD from Le Tigre, now she is a fo’REAL tranny.

8.

Funny how things don’t change much….There will always be Bunny Bixlers and Muriel Peuses, but there is only one Auntie Mame….a favorite of the all the Kwans.Crazy Jackethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520478885169294844noreply@blogger.com0
